I have decided to undergo the imfamous Nuzlocke Challenge.
What is the Nuzlocke Challenge, you may ask?
Well it was started from an online comic, from the same name, where they introduced an idea for a Hardcore mode for people who consider themselves Pokémon-experts. It's called Nuzlocke because of a reoccurring character in the series that is a Nuzleaf...
...that resembles Terry O'Quinn from Lost and his character John Locke...
... which would look something like this...
... even though I think Nuzleaf already looks like Locke and vise versa, but...
ANYWAYS!
The "Nuzlocke Challenge" has a cult following and it seems like most people are excitedly dreading their time when they go through with it. So I thought it would be my turn. I thought while Pokémon X and Y were fine in their own rights, I just felt like they were too easy and forgettable. What better reason to reset it (after giving a friend all the MegaStones and Legendaries they could carry) and give it a go?
So the following are my personal rules for the "Nuzlocke Challenge"
Rule 1:
If a Pokémon faints in or out of battle, it is considered dead and must be released. It is that simple and this is the first and foremost rule for any challenger.
Rule 2:
You may only catch the first Pokémon you run into in each Route and/or city, and no other on that Route and/or city. If the Pokémon faints or flees (curse you future Abras) it is considered that you failed to catch a Pokémon here and no more can be obtained. This is also another regular rule for the challenge. If you run out of Pokémon it is considered a GAME OVER.
Rule 2a:
If you run into a double battle or horde you may CHOOSE which Pokémon you can catch. Enough said here.
Rule 3:
A common rule, but not always enforced is to nickname every Pokémon you catch. I will be following this rule as I feel like it will join me and whatever Pokémon I catch together even moreso, also I feel like it would be better written out in reading nicknames of Pokémon on this blog rather then just saying their actual names.
Rule 4:
This is another common rule. If you black/white out (I think it's white out in Pokémon X and Y), it is considered a GAME OVER. That's it. Pack your bags, you failed.
These are considered some of the fundamental rules for the challenge. The following rules however are ones that I either have taken from other "Nuzlocke" followers or modified myself.
WhiteMistake Rule 1:
Trading and Wonder Trading are forbidden during playthrough. It would make the game easier if I started to Wonder Trade, or had a friend trade me something useful.
WhiteMistake Rule 1a:
However, if I capture a Pokémon that NEEDS to be traded to evolve, I can trade that so it can reach its full potential. But this is the only trade amendment in my Nuzlock Rules.
WhiteMistake Rule 2:
Sometimes NPC (non-playable characters, for those of you who don't know) will give away a Pokémon or Egg. This will count as the first encounter in the area (if it is the first encounter here) and the Pokémon must be accepted and can be used. If another Pokémon was already caught in this area, the Pokémon given must either be refused or released.
WhiteMistake Rule 3:
Legendaries cannot be used. Most of them are just super strong and helpful, so NO LEGENDARIES.
WhiteMistake Rule 4:
No fleeing battles. This is supposed to be harder, not easier. If I run into a Pokémon that will give me a hard time, I need to beat it, even if it costs me half my team.
WhiteMistake Rule 5:
No Daycare. It's easy to throw something in there and just have it level up when I struggle in the game. So none of that easy-peasy-lemon-squeezey stuff.
WhiteMistake Rule 6:
No heal items during battle. It can completely change the pace of the battle and make me more relaxed. I want to go into battles and start sweating bullets if I struggle and know I can't heal.
WhiteMistake Rule 6a:
Hold items, however, can be used, even if they heal. Like a berries. As that is more strategy... most of the time.
WhiteMistake Rule 7:
Exp. Share in X and Y made the game way to easy to level your team up so I will have to make the rule that I cannot use Exp. Share.
WhiteMistake Rule 8:
If I run into a shiny, I don't care what any of you say, I'm catching it. I will break rules for shinies. Which means I will either keep them in my PC and not use them or trade them to a friend for safe keeping. Screw the rules.
WhiteMistake Rule 9:
The final rule is one of my own creation, there are many people who use the starter soley for catching their first Pokémon during the challenge and then immediately releasing it. I don't want that. I will however after I catch my first new six, will store it in my PC and never touch it again... until (that is if I really mess this up) I am left to one single Pokémon. I consider it my back-up plan.
Other then that I just play the game!
Oh! Before I forget, there will be moments when I let chance choose my fate. When I am left with choices like choosing a starter or fossil or anyother moment in the game like this I will roll a die or flip a coin.
I'll try and keep the blog to be somewhat regularly updated.
I'm off to the Bahamas for a week though, when I come back I will hopefully have the first installment of the...
WHITEMISTAKE NUZLOCKE CHALLENGE
Completed.
In the meantime take this for some food for thought - -
Stay classy, folks!
